My success rate in execution has grown much higher. I spend the bulk of my time thinking, then land the decisive strike at the critical moment. That split second is reserved for observation and feeling; the long stretch that follows, unquestionably, belongs to reflection. It’s just like right now, as I make my way on foot to the Bund — walking is when I feel and recollect in silence, and it puts my mind in the ideal state for thinking.

I’ve been hoping to write a slim little book, just like those illustrated pocket volumes I picked up at Foyles bookshop in London. Whatever my salary may be down the line, this is a highly achievable and straightforward goal — I can create both images and text, a privilege far luckier than most writers can claim.

When my mind unfolds, thoughts gush forth like a babbling spring, endless and unbroken. The sea will often nudge the fish gently, wrapping it once more in the dark blue depths.

The eye socket forms an inverted trapezoid, its edges softened and blurred. The high bridge of my nose often cuts into the three o’clock position of my left eye — but fortunately, it can never obscure the reflection of myself, shimmering in that dark blue glow.
